Claude is a family of large language models and an AI assistant built by Anthropic, an AI safety company founded in 2021. Claude is designed around a training approach Anthropic calls Constitutional AI, which uses an explicit set of written principles to guide the model's behaviour. It is widely used in business for long-document analysis, careful drafting, coding and agentic workflows.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI researchers with a stated mission focused on AI safety and reliability. Its models are trained using Constitutional AI, in which the model is guided by an explicit written set of principles — drawn from sources including the UN Declaration of Human Rights and platform trust and safety guidance — rather than relying solely on human preference labelling. Anthropic also publishes a Responsible Scaling Policy that ties capability releases to defined safety evaluations.
For a corporate buyer this matters in a specific, practical way. Claude tends to be more conservative about speculative claims, more willing to flag uncertainty, and more consistent when handling sensitive or ambiguous material. In regulated environments — legal, financial services, healthcare — that behaviour is generally an asset rather than a limitation.
Large context windows allow whole contracts, tender packs, board papers or policy libraries to be analysed in one pass, with cross-references maintained across the document.
Nuanced rewriting that preserves meaning and register — useful for legal correspondence, regulatory submissions and technical documentation.
Reliably pulling defined fields, clauses, obligations or dates out of unstructured documents into a consistent schema.
Claude models are widely used for code generation, refactoring and review, including within agentic developer tooling.
Strong support for calling external tools and running multi-step tasks, which underpins many custom agent deployments.
Claude is available as a consumer subscription, as Claude for Work team and enterprise plans with administrative controls and SSO, through the Anthropic API, and through cloud marketplaces including Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI. Anthropic states that business inputs and outputs are not used to train its models by default, and enterprise plans add the audit and identity controls that compliance teams expect. For organisations with data residency requirements, running Claude through a cloud provider's managed service is often the cleanest route.

Treat these as complementary rather than competing. Microsoft 365 Copilot wins where the requirement is permissioned access to the organisation's own Microsoft content inside the apps people already use. ChatGPT wins on breadth of general-purpose content production and the maturity of its custom assistant ecosystem. Claude wins on long-document rigour, careful language and agentic reliability. A sensible enterprise position is one primary in-suite assistant plus one specialist platform for the workloads where it demonstrably performs better, all covered by a single usage policy.
